The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore motion to the joints and function and to the nerves. What the adjustment actually does is put motion into the joint and let the bone be free to align itself correctly. In spite of all the different chiropractic techniques, that is all an adjustment of any kind does.
Instructions from our brain are sent to all parts of the body as electrical impulses. These impulses travel along the spinal cord, which subdivides into individual nerve fibers throughout the body. These nerve fibers go to all the structures and organs of the body and allow them to function.
Although the spinal column is a sturdy structure, individual bones can become misplaced.
One of the most common causes of the misplaced or misaligned vertebra is an auto accident. Many everyday activities can result in misalignments as well: heavy lifting, sports injuries, sitting for prolonged periods, not warming up before exercise, sleeping on your stomach or twisting your back during sleep.
When the vertebra is in the proper position, the nerve impulses can flow freely, racing to and from the brain at incredible speeds.
Here are some of the things the chiropractic adjustment does:
- Releases endorphins, which are natural pain relieving substances the body makes.
- Improves nutrient supply to the joints.
- Reduces pressure on the inflamed nerves.
- Increases joint motion.
- Improves immune system response
- Improves digestion.
- Muscle relaxation.
- Feeling of well-being.
